MESSAGE FROM IRA S. GOFFMAN, CHAIR, MONTEFIORE BOARD OF DIRECTORS: STORMS AHEAD BUT CLEARING TO FOLLOW

I look out of my office window and see dark rain clouds rolling in from the west. It looks ominous. I wait a few hours and the rain stops and I see the blue sky clearing ahead. As the new Chair of the Montefiore board of Directors, that is what I see for Montefiore’s future.

I see healthcare access and funding being debated at federal and state levels. Medicaid currently only pays for about two-thirds of the cost of caring for our residents. Government proposals for future reimbursements… (Click on the newsletter link above for more…)

Montefiore Residents Turns 106 – Happy Birthday Harriet!

Montefiore Resident Celebrates Her 106th Birthday – Happy Birthday Harriet!

(Beachwood, Ohio) Montefiore is wishing a very happy birthday to resident Harriet Prochaska, who is celebrating her 106th birthday today – Wednesday, July 19. Harriet is celebrating her milestone birthday this evening at her favorite restaurant, Denny’s, with her six children. But, the festivities don’t stop there! She will continue with a big, family dinner on Sunday, where she will enjoy time with her 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, as well as her favorite cocktail – a vodka and ginger ale!

Harriet has always had a big family. Born in 1911 in Cleveland, Ohio, Harriet had 11 brothers and sisters. A skilled poker player, Harriet grew up playing the game with her family every Thursday night, and continues to do so every month with her kids, friends and even her 104-year-old sister! Harriet has always enjoyed holiday celebrations and parties, even being dubbed the “Valentine Fairy”, sending more than 200 valentines to family and friends each year with $1 inside to buy a winning lottery ticket. She also loves bingo, golf and playing Solitaire everyday on her computer.

She was married to her husband, the late Dr. Charles J. Prochaska, for 64 years and was a secretary for a dentist office while he attended medical school. During World War Two, Charles joined the air force as a flight surgeon, causing the couple to move to Mississippi, Indiana and then Florida. However, the Prochaska’s returned back to Cleveland after the war to continue to raise their six children; Carole, Louise, Charles Jr., Georgia, Joanne and Mary Beth.

Harriet says she owes her long life to her husband Charles, who took such great care of her while they were together.

Her advice for young people today? Harriet says, “Always go to church and be good to your parents!”

MESSAGE FROM JEFFREY S. DAVIS, CHAIR, THE MONTEFIORE FOUNDATION: MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OUR RESIDENTS

Many years ago, Elaine Rocker, of blessed memory, and past chair of The Montefiore Foundation, asked me to serve as The Montefiore Foundation board chair and I told her I had too many business commitments. Three years ago, I agreed to serve as board chair after being assured it would entail only four meetings a year, even though it’s more like four meetings a month! All kidding aside, I have enjoyed my tenure as chair as well as the many years I have spent on the Foundation Board, which I will be leaving to serve on the Montefiore Board of Directors.

RABBI’S MESSAGE: A HERO AMONG US

In New York City, a homeless man fell from a subway station platform. Though some stood by in horror, helplessly afraid to do no more than call the police, a brave, young man jumped onto the tracks to the rescue. Within moments, he lifted the fallen man to safety and became a hero.

I have the good fortune to work every day knowing what I accomplish makes a difference to the patients, residents and families at Montefiore, The Weils and those in the community. With each and every initiative, we move closer to having the resources to provide the best in quality care. We all know the healthcare landscape is uncertain. We also know that it takes financial resources to do what we do – addressing our residents’ needs. You, as a community, understand these needs and continually respond accordingly.

Shining Through The Years – Montefiore’s 135th Annual Meeting

Montefiore celebrated its 135th annual meeting on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 on its Beachwood campus in the Maltz Auditorium. More than 200 guests were in attendance including board members, volunteers, staff, residents and community members. The evening was held with much celebration as President & CEO Seth Vilensky spoke on “Creating a Bright Future.” Outgoing Board Chair Larry Mack gave remarks on “Looking Back & Moving Forward.” Senior Rabbi Richard A. Block, of The Temple – Tifereth Israel, and The Montefiore Foundation Director Debbie Rothschild presented Tamar and Milton Maltz with the Harley I. Gross Presidential Award. Margo Vinney was honored as a Life Director and the 2017 Above and Beyond Employee Excellence Award recipients were recognized.

Creating successful results in cooking requires the right ingredients. You add a tablespoon of this, a cup of that, sprinkled with seasonings – all to make the perfect dish.

Our volunteer services program is similar. Our volunteers add their own ingredients of kindness, compassion, creativity and love to the work that they do each and every day.

 

In addition, each of our volunteers at Montefiore and The Weils, are different and special but together, create something that everyone enjoys. Volunteers are a key ingredient resulting in  our recipe of success.

The Willensky Residence, a Montefiore Memory Care Assisted Living Community

As a leader in senior healthcare since 1882, Montefiore, in Beachwood, Ohio offers a memory care for individuals with early- to-mid-stage dementia who need assisted living and dementia care support.

By caring for those with dementia in an assisted living setting, this soothing yet stimulating community will keep individuals active and engaged in a compassionate, supportive and safe environment. A separate and secure entrance with ample parking for visitors to provide direct access to the pavilion.

An open and safe kitchen with a comfortable dining room and counter area allows residents, their loved ones and staff help prepare breakfast and bake together with a focus on independence. Lunch and dinner is provided from Montefiore’s central kitchen.Cozy spaces allow for visiting, activities and interactive programming. Each resident will have the freedom to choose the degree of socialization, as well as his or her daily schedule.

Resident living spaces includes 18 studio rooms and seven suites. Each studio room has its own private bathroom with shower while each suite has a living room, bedroom and private bathroom with shower  All 25 rooms/suites have built-in closets, a bathroom with shower, along with safety features to enhance the overall warmth and intimate feeling of each resident room.

The 1000-square-foot exterior expansion, adjacent to the kitchen and activity/dining room, includes a living room and multi-faceted library with computer stations and a multi-sensory environment (MSE) room, which offers stimulation of senses – touch, sound, smell, taste and sight – proven to help those with dementia reconnect with their environment. This type of room is based on the success of a Snoezelen® Sensory Room, an alternative treatment approach where individuals with memory impairment and other types of dementia are offered opportunities to become more aware of their surroundings and encourages better interaction with their environment and those around them.

This relaxing and comfortable MSE room offers soothing background music and peaceful sounds (e.g., birds singing, wind blowing, ocean waves, etc.), aroma therapy, visual displays including colorful and tactile artwork – to reduce agitation, anxiety and apathy and increase mobility and communication.

Safe, secure and accessible walking paths, outdoor gardens and courtyards.

Montefiore is working in partnership with Dr. Lori-Stevic-Rust, PH.D., ABPP, clinical health psychologist and dementia expert, as its program advisor for this new assisted living memory care program and pavilion. Dr. Stevic-Rust holds a doctoral degree in psychology, a master’s degree in community counseling and has been awarded a Diplomate from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in Board Certified Clinical Health Psychology. She is a contributing writer for Cleveland Business Connects magazine and is a regular contributor to Fox 8 News and WKYC channel 3.  Dr. Stevic-Rust is a national speaker on health-related topics with specialty areas in geriatrics and stress disorders.

If you love to sing or rap … if you want to showcase your talent … if you can imagine yourself performing on stage under Playhouse Square lights … you’ll want to participate in the first-ever Shining Star CLE!

This unique vocal competition gives high school students from Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Medina and Summit counties (including home-schooled high school students) the chance to compete for college scholarships and perform at the renown Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square! All participants must have a 2018-2021 high school graduation date.

MESSAGE FROM SETH VILENSKY, MONTEFIORE PRESIDENT & CEO: COMMITTED TO CARING

With the 2016 election behind us, many people have asked, ‘what does this mean for Montefiore’? This is an excellent questions, given that the cast majority of our revenue comes from government sources and healthcare policy and regulation dictates much of our operations. At this point, I can honestly say that it is too early to prognosticate on specific policy implications. We just don’t know exactly how the new administration will act on issues important to eldercare.

THE POSH NOSH CAFE – A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN EAT, VOLUNTEER AND PLAY!

Tucked away in the lobby of Montefiore is the Posh Nosh Cafe – a little retreat where residents can have a “nosh” while visiting with family and guests or where staff can take a break from their busy workday. Delicious, freshly-prepared taco salads, barbecue chicken quesadillas or soft-serve ice cream sundaes (dispensed from our new soft-serve machine thanks to donors Lynn and David Heiman) are just a few of the many offerings you can choose from on the menu.
