What can Safety at
Home do for me?

Safety at Home offers practical solutions
of living so that you can maximize
independence and enhance quality of
life. Safety at Home will help you
modify your living environment and
activities in the comfort and privacy of
your own home.

How does the program
work?

A trained Occupational Therapist visits
your home to perform a comprehensive
home safety assessment, evaluating each
room for risks and accessibility. Next,
the therapist assesses your daily routines
for ease, independence and safety.

Finally, the therapist prepares a written
report of findings and recommendations
that may include, for example, adaptive
equipment, durable medical equipment
and practical strategies to improve skills
and confidence for continued independent
living at home.

What’s an Occupational
Therapist?

Occupational therapists are independent
living specialists. They analyze and
evaluate home environments and use
their expertise to make practical recommendations. Their goal is the same as yours: to age in
place while improving quality of life.

How much does an evaluation
cost?

The Safety at Home program is FREE to senior
adults in their homes. Participants receive:

  • Written recommendations of home modifications and living strategies
  • Recommendations for medical equipment
    and assistive devices, if needed
  • Injury prevention and wellness
    handouts and
  • Follow-up visit, if needed.

Still not sure if you need
Safety at Home?

Consider the following:

  • Accidents are the 6th leading cause of death among people over the age of 65. The majority of these accidents occur in the home. It is crucial to evaluate home safety!
  • One-third to one-half of accidents and falls
can be prevented with home modifications
    and repair.
  • Home modifications allow people to remain
in their homes while still accommodating
    lifestyle.
  • Assistive devices, such as grab bars
and a shower bench, can be installed
easily in the home. These devices
    allow for independent living, whereas
    previously some assistance may have
    been required.

According to a 2000 National Survey
conducted by the American Association
of Retired Persons, 89% of people over
the age of 55 say that they would like to
remain in their homes for as long as
possible. You’re probably one of them!

Make the choice today to prevent injury,
improve your safety and maximize
independence.

The Safety at Home program does not, nor is it
designed to, include an individual occupational
evaluation and treatment. An occupational evaluation must be ordered by a physician.
