10th Grader Josh Goldman Enjoys "History Lessons" While Volunteering at Montefiore

Junior Volunteer Josh Goldman enjoys learning about history first-hand from the residents with whom he spends Friday afternoons at Montefiore. Although more than seven decades separate him and residents like Sol Ganz, Josh enjoys hearing about what life was like many years ago. Josh especially enjoys when Mr. Ganz recalls stories about the small town in Poland where he spent his boyhood.

Now entering 11th grade at Hebrew Academy, Josh began volunteering three years ago when his 8th grade class visited Montefiore.

"I enjoy volunteering at Montefiore," explains Josh. "I believe it is a good thing to do - it is a mitzvah (good deed)."

While at Montefiore once a week, Josh visits with residents, including Sol Ganz, Mardelle Swed, Sam Shane, Mary Newman and Pearl Goldman. Often he puts on tefillin (phylacteries) with the male residents and helps them with their daily prayers.

The son of Howard & Suri Goldman, Josh spends time with friends when not in school or volunteering. An excellent student, Josh also enjoys being involved in his school's night study program in which participants return to the Hebrew Academy Monday through Thursday evenings to learn about Torah and say their maariv (evening) prayer.

Judaic Arts Happenings at Montefiore

The next few months offer residents a variety of activities. Our Yiddish Club is exploring the possibility of taking several members to the International Conference of Yiddish Clubs, in Cleveland in early August - we'll keep you posted! "Sceniors Acting Out!," a new Montefiore activity is already winning the hearts of residents, providing the opportunity to expand their theatrical wings, and become someone else, if only for a few minutes!

The second "Cabaret with a Cantor at the Posh" will be Thursday, July 26, giving residents a chance to nosh in posh style, to the tunes of Cleveland's finest cantors.

Finally, our adult bar/bat mitzvah initiative is underway with Rabbi Chazin and is being offered to any resident wishing to be called to the torah and share this simcha with friends and family. For more information, or to suggest programming ideas, please contact Chuck Fink, Judaic Arts Coordinator, at (216) 910-2621.

Tisha B'Av

Tisha B'Av, literally meaning the ninth day of the month of Av, is a day of mourning. Tisha B'Av commemorates the many tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people, primarily the destruction of the first and second Temples.
This year, Tisha B'Av falls on Tuesday, July 24 and in commemoration, services will be held in the Chapel at the following times:

Monday, July 23 at 3:30 pm - Erev Tisha B.Av Tuesday, July 24 at 10:30 am - Tisha B.Av

Message From Rabbi Joel Chazin
"Now, What Does the Rabbi Do, Exactly?"

The Jewish tradition is rich in its variety, history and inspiration. But how to translate that into programming that will hold the attention of our elders? I believe that Montefiore can hold its head high in this regard. I offer below a synopsis of our daily programming to entice your Jewish learning and spirituality. Please note that all programs are held in the Chapel unless otherwise indicated.

Mondays at 11 am, I offer a time for stories - an opportunity to share information on our customs and traditions, in other words, a cornucopia of Jewish life, now and then entitled, Jewish Inspiration.

Tuesdays at 11 am, we have Body and Soul. This includes needed exercise of our limbs, breathing, meditation, music and an occasional psalm, all to provide healing and an up-beat start to the day.

Thursdays at 2:30 pm, I have begun an informal gathering for our post-hospital care residents entitled, In Search of Hope, held in the Myers 1 dining area. It consists of conversation and inspiration to be of help when there's an unwelcome event in one's life.

Adding to our religious life, a Mincha (afternoon) service is held daily, Monday through Thursday from 3:30 - 4 pm.

A significant resource, our Caregivers Support Group is held the third Tuesday of each month from 2:15 - 3:15 pm, usually in the first floor conference room. This is an indispensable source of strength for family members in danger of emotional overload.

So, what are you waiting for? The above are opportunities available to you and our residents. Please join us and as always if you have additional questions, contact me at (216) 910-2522

The Call of The Weils
Mary Jean DeVaul, Life Enrichment Coordinator

Special thanks to Idarose and Ted Luntz, a Yale alum, for providing the funding for the Society of Orpheus and Bacchus. The students from Yale provided an afternoon of music, comedy and spirit.

The Weils salutes Madeline Baker for being honored by the Hospice and Palliative Care Partners of Ohio's hospice care program. Madeline visits hospice patients and was given an engraved clock for her dedication. Join us on Wednesday, July 4 - Independence Day - as we get in the holiday spirit and Bob Glueck performs music from Hollywood and Broadway. A patriotic happy hour will ease us into Chef Ron's barbecue at 5 pm. There is still time to make reservations to have dinner with your family members.

'A Day at the Beach' is our theme for July. So grab your sunglasses and sun hats as residents and staff dress in beach attire on Monday, July 9. Bring your favorite beach photos to put on display in the case outside the cafe for those that dare. Our beach party happy hour will help cool off all our thirsty beach bums!

On Wednesday, August 8 at 4 pm, Joel Scigliano sings and dances with residents in the cafe. J oin him and his regulars who help keep him on his toes.

Dance Image is a local dance studio that entertains us frequently. Their dancers range in age from four-year-olds to teenagers, while their high spirits and enthusiasm keep residents wanting more. Join us for the Dance Image performance on Saturday, August 18 at 3 pm.

The long, hot summer eases into "Hawaiian Holiday" - our theme for August! Bob and Shelly Orlandi will entertain us on Thursday, August 23 at 7 pm. Being Hawaiian, Shelly will give hula lessons to those brave enough to try, while the limbo stick will measure how limber our guests are! Dress island style for immersing in the spirit of the evening and let's try to beat our numbers from last year.

And don't forget to try your hand at jackpot bingo held the last weekend of every month. Volunteer Sue Bauer, whose mother, Libbey Boyk, lives at The Weils, calls the game. The crowd continues to grow as does the jackpot!

Variety of Activities and Services Tailored to Russian Speaking Residents

Lunches at Russian restaurants. Concerts of Russian singers. Movies in Russian. The list sounds more like the activities on an international cruise ship rather than the offerings of a nursing home, but those are just a sampling of all that Montefiore offers to its Russian speaking residents.

Activities coordinator, Yelena Goyzman rattles off the list of activities including a Russian social group, birthday parties, reading of Russian magazines and interesting articles, Russian crossword puzzles, playing cards and a Russian exercise group. A highlight is the monthly lunch outing to a Russian restaurant where residents enjoy food of their heritage and the company of their peers.

All these social, physical and educational offerings have had a big impact on Montefiore's Russian speaking residents explains Ida Prilutsky, a social worker on Mandel 1 and Myers 2. "Our Russian speaking residents' needs are better met and family members feel more comfortable knowing that Montefiore has a Russian speaking staff," explains Prilutsky.

In addition to Yelena and Ida, Lana Dicesare, assistant director of nursing, also speaks Russian and is helpful in coordinating services and communicating.

Many of Montefiore's approximately 30 Russian speaking residents have rich histories and backgrounds. For example, 96-year-old Yankel Talis became a commander of the Partisan movement in the Ukraine during World War II. Residents come from varied geographical areas and ethnic groups, but all share the language and commonality of immigrating to the United States.

To learn more about the activities of Montefiore.s Russian speaking residents, please contact Yelena at ygoyzman@montefiorecare.org. Additionally, Montefiore is always looking for Russian-speaking volunteers to assist with residents. To volunteer and get involved, please contact Sharon Shucard, volunteer recruitment specialist at (216) 910-2282.

Welcome On Board!

We are pleased to introduce you to the new faces that will help strengthen Montefiore in the years to come. Montefiore's commitment to attracting first-rate leaders is evident with the latest additions to our Board of Directors..

Hal Becker is a nationally known author, sales coach and customer service expert. He is looking forward to a "learning year" at Montefiore, because as he says, "you have to listen before you talk." A native Clevelander, he and his wife, Holly, live in Solon with their 15-year-old daughter, Nicole. Hal's other community involvements include past COSE board member, Better Business Bureau trustee and immediate past chair of the Solon Chamber of Commerce.

Reuven Dessler is excited to be a part of the "wonderful work that is being done at Montefiore, which is such a valuable asset to the community." Reuven is co-founder and CEO of The Mazel Company, a wholesaler of closeout merchandise. He is a resident of Cleveland Heights and a member of Young Israel of Greater Cleveland and Congregation Shomre Shabbos. He and his wife of 38 years, Naomi, have five grown children and has many wonderful grandchildren. Reuven's community involvement also extends to the Jewish Community Federation where he is a trustee and The Hebrew Academy where he serves as vice president.

Gloria Fine is the Montefiore Auxiliary representative to the board of directors. No stranger to Montefiore, Gloria is a dedicated volunteer, donor and the 2006 recipient of Montefiore's Woman of Valor award. Together with her husband, Irving B. Fine, they dedicated The Gloria and Irving B. Fine Walkway which connects the post-hospital care center with Rehab Road. They also dedicated the Gloria & Irving B. Fine Healing Garden - a therapeutic garden designed for Mandel I residents. Gloria is vice president of Montefiore's MoMart Gift Shop.

Marilyn Garfunkel is "impressed with the high level of enthusiasm from everyone she meets at Montefiore." Marilyn grew up in Cleveland, graduating from Cleveland Heights High, and is raising her family of three children, ages 23, 22 and 16, with her husband, Steven in Moreland Hills. Her background includes working with adolescents in mental health, having worked for a mental health agency in Akron for almost 18 years. A member of The Temple-Tifereth Israel, she served as co-president of the Temple Women.s Association for a number of years.

It is with pleasure that we welcome back Gerald W. Goldberg, a past board member and chair of The Montefiore Foundation. He is the founder and president of Winslow Asset Management, a boutique investment firm serving individuals and organizations. "Montefiore has a wealth of dedicated volunteers and staff that show incredible commitment to the entity and the people it serves," says Gerry, a member of The Temple-Tifereth Israel. His other involvements include the Jewish Community Federation, Bellefaire and American Jewish Committee.

Native Clevelander and first time Montefiore board member, Aaron Handler brings to the table 20+ years of operating both not-for-profit and for-profit long-term care organizations. He owns Oakwood Health Care Services, Inc. and multiple nursing facilities around the state of Ohio. His educational background includes a masters degree in public health with a major in health care administration. Additionally, he co-owns an institutional pharmacy based in Cincinnati which provides medications to long-term care organizations. A resident of Beachwood, Aaron is a member of Green Road Synagogue.

Lee Rosen recently moved back to the Cleveland area from New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Although he had been away from Northeast Ohio for 30 years, this Shaker Heights High School and Bradley University graduate marvels at how warm and welcoming the Jewish community has been. "It doesn't matter how long you've been gone, the bonds that you have with those you grew up with are strong," remarks Lee. He looks forward to helping Montefiore plan for the "long-term care needs of the population in Cleveland" and recognizes that as "baby-boomers age, there will be more and more need for long term care." Lee is a partner with New York Life Insurance Company, overseeing recruitment, training and development of new sales representatives. A resident of Bainbridge, Lee is also involved with the Hebrew Free Loan Association and the Jewish Community Federation.

Beverly Gans, Vice President
Montefiore Foundation

I would agree that these are the crazy days of summer, but lazy... nope! We are very busy at Montefiore and so excited about Foundation activities during the months of July and August. Rabbi Bob Alper will be entertaining our residents, families and friends with his delightful humorous patter on Thursday evening, July 12 at 7 pm, a gift to the Montefiore Family from the Borovitz Entertainment Fund. Millie, daughter Sheri Borovitz- Linda and sons, Rabbi Mark Borovitz and Rabbi Neal Borovitz will be joining us that evening as we memorialize their late son and brother, Stuart Borovitz, through this wonderful annual event.

August brings two more terrific activities to Montefiore - the Annual Foundation Donor Brunch, chaired by Foundation board member Harriet Fader, on Sunday, August 5 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and Montefiore's Sundae Social, a whirlwind of fun, entertainment and good food to celebrate our 125th anniversary on Sunday, August 19 from 1 - 4 pm, chaired by Montefiore board members, Gloria Fine and Margo Vinney.

In gratitude for the generosity of our donors, the Montefiore Foundation invites those who have provided major gifts for our expansion project or supported a new or existing program with their gift of $10,000 or more. We laud those who have established funds for general or special purposes, along with individuals who have contributed $1,000 or more to this year's Annual Sustaining Campaign. We celebrate the visionary members of our Montefiore Legacy Society who have named Montefiore in their wills or have planned gifts to ensure our future. We also express gratitude to foundations and organizations that have granted support for our strategic initiatives. This year, our brunch features the dedication of all building expansion projects.

You and the Cleveland Jewish community will be invited to view these spectacular enhancements to Montefiore at the next exciting event - Montefiore's Sundae Social!

On Sunday afternoon, August 19, Montefiore will host an old fashioned ice cream social, complete with clowns, balloons, magicians, a barbershop quartet, ice cream and all the fixings, popcorn, cookies and lemonade, face-painting, a mitzvah project, antique car rides and tours of the building! I know I am forgetting other great features of the afternoon, but you won't forget anything if you plan to join us to celebrate Montefiore's 125th anniversary in our extraordinary "new Montefiore."

See you there!
