Families and community members can now refer to Montefiore’s newly opened assisted living memory care pavilion by name: The Willensky Residence, A Montefiore Assisted Memory Care Community.

The eight-unit facility on Montefiore’s Beachwood campus received the moniker following an “extraordinary” $2 million bequest from Judy and Steve Willensky, both of whom serve on Montefiore’s board of directors. Steve Willensky is board chairman.

“We are so appreciative of Steve and Judy’s generosity and foresight,” said Lauren Rock, Montefiore president and CEO. “They truly epitomize the tangible meaning of philanthropy and visionary board leadership. Not only are we fortunate that Steve is our board chair, but that Judy too is a strong leader and true friend of Montefiore.”

Steve Willensky said that he and his wife are excited about what The Willensky Residence brings to Northeast Ohio.

“We are thrilled to help Montefiore meet this critical community need and are proud to have our name associated with such a beautiful and warm assisted living residence,” Willensky said. “Everything is perfect down to the last detail, but what makes it truly special are the continuous activities and tailored memory stimulation programs developed by world-class experts that engage our seniors and improve their quality of life.”

The Willensky Residence was built to provide for the needs of individuals with early- to mid-stage dementia who need assisted living and memory care support, according to Montefiore.

The Willensky Residence offers “services and specialized programming for those whose needs go beyond the care in a traditional assisted living facility and who don’t yet need comprehensive services at a nursing home level.” It also offers “around-the-clock staffing and individualized programming with dementia-certified staff to keep residents as independent, engaged and active as possible.”

First announced in March 2012, the $1 million project, which included a 1,000-square-foot external expansion and renovation of 4,400 square feet of existing space, was completed in the fall. By early January 2013, seven of the pavilion’s eight living spaces – two suites and six studios, each with its own private bathroom and shower – will already be occupied, according to Montefiore.

The Willensky Residence also features gathering areas, a quiet room, a multi-sensory room for stimulation of the five senses, a beauty salon and barber, and fully-equipped laundry room. Outside, residents can take advantage of a secure courtyard garden and walking path with seating areas.

“There is nothing like The Willensky Residence in the area,” Rock said. “It sets us apart from other senior housing campuses and is a much-needed service line to our continuum of care. This generous bequest helped turn our vision into a reality and strategically positions Montefiore for future endeavors to meet the challenging and changing needs of the communities we serve.

“We’re thrilled with the way The Willensky Residence came out in terms of the design and environment, and we’re thrilled with the program we’ve been able to establish there,” Rock said. “We’re very excited about the future.”
